What Causes Stiff Neck, Aching Joints, Swelling In Hands And Feet?

I have been experiencing swelling in my hands and feet for several days - seems to get worse when I sit at the end of the day. Neck is stiff, aching in joints - ok with Aleve. Do have Graves disease but had blood work within the last month and all was ok. Don t know how concerned I should be.

Hello,

You have history of having Graves disease, presently you are having aching joints and swelling in the hands and feet. Swelling in the hands and feet may be indicative of developing coronary artery disease, deep vein thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, blood clots, liver dysfunction, etc. Other medical condition that may cause similar problems are chronic venous insufficiency, ulcer or wounds, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, excess salt intake, raised blood glucose level, etc.

Stiff neck can be caused by wrong posture while sitting, standing or sleeping. By working for a long time on PC or laptop. Lack of exercises. Medical condition causing neck stiffness are OA, RA, cervical spondylosis, cervical degenerative disc, frozen shoulder, etc. You can take Aleve or Combiflam, one SOS when needed but you should get it clinically examined by an orthopedist, get required blood works, urinalysis, imaging tests done to detect the pathology causing you symptoms. You will be treated accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
