What Causes Stiff Hair From Inside A Scar?

I am 63 years old and had my last Caeserian section 33 years ago. This morning, while showering, I noticed a stiff hair where the scar was. Since I have had some stiff hairs in my eyebrows as I age, I thought that s what it was. I tried to pull it out with a tweezers but it kept getting longer. I looked with a mirror, and when I pulled this long hair (3 inches) I saw that it was pulling underneath the skin at the far edges of the scar. I cut the end off but am concerned. It was a blue synthetic thread. Does this need to be checked out? Could I have damaged internal tissue by pulling on this thread? Thanks for your help.

Hi,

The blue color thread you pulled out is the remnant of the old stitches put under your skin to close the muscle. Rather rare for it to come out after 33 years. Indeed, it is 'Vicryl' (polyglactin 910) is an absorbable, synthetic, usually braided suture, manufactured by Ethicon Inc and it gets absorbed by the body, within 10 -15 days. Pulling it out is the best thing you did, it will not lead to any complications. Perhaps it is worth reporting in the medical literature.
