What Causes Stabbing Pain In Chest After Having Sunflower Seeds?

I ve been eating sunflower seeds for a few hours, including swallowing the shells, not all of which were completely chewed up. Suddenly, I experienced a sever, stabbing pain in the middle of my chest, right beneath my sternum, which lasted about fifteen seconds. Did the shells cause this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Eating without proper chewing dry and rough things of a big serving is bound to cause some local friction in the esophagus and a sort of difficult in swallowing. This has caused the stretching of the esophageal lumen and injury to mucus membrane leading to the pain you had. Good chewing of dry objects with intermittent sips of water would prevent it in future. If there is still some burning or pain retrosternally, sucking of Gelusil pill over the counter would help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
