What Causes Spitting Sutures Post Tummy Tuck Procedure?

Dear Doctor, I am a 54 year old mother ( U.S. Citizen) who had a tummy tuck in 2005. A year later I started experiencing spitting sutures one after another. I had 4 spitting sutures removed in 2011. It s now 2015 and I still continue on having spitting sutures ( 3 that I can see, but I can not see the ones inside my navel). Due to the fact that I m now residing in Australia and a bit tired of dealing with this issue, can I leave things as is? Generally speaking, I m in good health and under no prescribed medications. Thanks for your advice. E.M.

Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the spitting sutures may be indicative of weakness of underlying abdomen sheath structures strength from various reasons. There can be development of incisional hernia in certain cases as well, which is usually contributed by:
- Increased intra-abdominal pressure via coughing
- Severe chronic constipation
- Urinary retention as prostate enlargement or urethral narrowing
- Weight lifting maneuvers
- Engaging in heavy sports activities

If an ultrasound report of the abdomen and pelvis along with the soft tissue structures evaluation of the operative site is carried out, it is of immense importance in this regard.
