What Causes Spells Of Dizziness Followed By Increased Energy Level?

Q: Hello. around four weeks ago the night before i went snowboarding i stayed up till around 1 o clock. not abnormal for me. However, when i was going to sleep the room starting getting darker, and my brain felt as if it were spinning, with a headache to boot. I passed this of as anxiety/apprehension and eventually got some sleep, but the next day while waiting in the lift line i started to get bouts of dizziness and blackness. I fought it off for some time, however eventually i passed out again and broke the retaining wall to the left of me. The curious part of the whole thing is that directly after i get a burst of energy (adrenalin) and have no abnormal feelings whatsoever. I continued snowboarding all day after being checked out by a ski patrol and eating without any problems whatsoever. Again, i left it to be dismissed as the slight cold i had that had been going around. However last night, (when im lying down i dont get the nauseous feeling) i saw the shadows moving in my room and it happened exactly like the last time at night. besides these occurences, ive had headaches that are off and on, sleepiness/tiredness (not to an extreme amount but noticeable) and a pressure as if my brain were too big for my head that is central to the forehead. Also i have 4-5 times had my hearing go out slightly, in both ears, then come back. I d like to note that there is no pressure under an eye and therefore i would believe it is not a brain tumor. any help would be greatly appreciated. -Derek Edgington

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Reasons for your symptoms:
- Inner ear along with middle ear problems; the infection from nose can travel through Eustachian tubes to the middle ears behind eardrums to cause fluid build up hence the problem with hearing. The inflammation to the inner ear structures cause imbalance of fluid in semicircular canals and cause symptoms.
- Cervical spondilitis, reduced vertebral artery flow
- Associated problems with brain can cause other symptoms.
- General diseases like malaria, typhoid, flu also can cause similar symptoms.

Hence I would advise you to go to nearby ER/your doctor for clinical evaluation, examination and investigations. Get started on symptomatic treatment and specific treatment once the investigations are ready reported. Take full bed rest for early recovery. Plenty of oral fluids. Complete the investigations, follow up till cured.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
