What Causes Sore Throat With Redness And White Bumps?

I just noticed I have a sore throat with what looks like redness and little white bumps in my throat. My knees have been swollen for a few days. History of rheumatic fever as an adult, scarlet fever as a child, and currently taking Tapazole to treat Graves Disease. It is Saturday, and not sure if I should go to an emergency room tonight or to urgent care tomorrow, or maybe wait until Monday to get in to see my doctor.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query sore throat with redness and white bumps pointing towards a condition known as granular pharyngitis. White bumps are indicative of streptococcal infection. Need not to worry. I would suggest you consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (penicillin or amoxicillin ) or anti viral drug depending upon the diagnosis along with decongestants and anti inflammatory. to start with warm saline gargles and betadine gargles 3-4 times a day. For pain and swelling you should take ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Avoid hot, sharp , spicy food substances , do warm saline rinses and carbonated beverages.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
