What Causes Sore Throat With Coughing Up Of Orange Mucus Post A Cholecystectomy?

I had surgery four months ago to remove my gallbladder and have had a sore throat with coughing/spitting up think clumps of green and orange mucus. I was on an antibiotic right after surgery and then again 3 weeks later but it still hasn t cleared up. Other than a low grade fever on occasion I haven t noticed any other symptoms, should I go to a clinic or is it a possibility that it s viral and I should wait it out?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of Cholecystectomy 4 months ago, have had sore throat with expectoration of green and orange mucus, were kept on antibiotic after surgery but the problems has not yet cleared up. The coughing with colorful expectoration does not last so much if the etiology is of viral origin hence bacterial origin is most likely.

Hence I would advise you the following: Consult a Pulmonologist for clinical evaluation and examination. X-ray chest and confirmatory CT scan of chest may show the cause. Relevant tests of blood will help further. Send the colored expectoration for gram staining, culture and sensitivity, AFB staining. All these things will lead to a proper diagnosis, gives best choice for an appropriate antibiotic and helps to cure the problems.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
