What Causes Sore Throat, Numbness In Left Side Of Face And Tiredness?

Hi, I am a 43 y male, who has always been physically fit, ran a couple of marathons and continued to run 10 -13 miles at a time, up until a few months ago. I had a sore throat last year (April time) went to Drs, they weren t too concerned, it went away. February this year painful throat returned, but with numbness or tingling down left side of face, added with constant tiredness and lack of energy, and can t run more then a couple of miles. This is now constant, Drs referred me to a ENT consultant ( appointment in 2 weeks) and had MRI on head, no results yet. Over last week or so, I have been itchy all over and whenever I urinate I feel the need to go again. It s also very hard to get a appointment at the doctors. Many Thanks Steven

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Sore throat, tingling & numbness on the left side of the face is commonly caused by bacterial or viral infection that is affecting the facial nerve. It can be triggered by dental infections or other dental problems and anxiety also. Nerve sensitivity and damage may cause bell's palsy. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a dentist to rule out any dental problems. Get treated for your sore throat at the earliest.

Rinse your mouth and gargle at least three times a day with warm water and salt. A course of non sedating antihistamines and antibiotic (Augmentin or Doxycycline) will help. Get urinalysis (R/E and C/S) done to detect UTI, if test is positive you may need a course of antibiotics. Drink plenty of water to flush out infection.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
