What Causes Sore Throat And Pain In The Left Ear?

Thanks for your help. I have had congestion and a worsening sore throat for the past three days. Now I am starting to feel pain in my left ear when I swallow. Swallowing also hurts. I don t think that I have a fever. What do you advise? There is a walk-in clinic five blocks from my house. They would probably give me antibiotics if I asked for them. I also have a Azithromycin (Zithromax) at home and could take that without going out.

HI,

Thanks for using HealthcareMagic

Most cases of congestion and sore throat are due to viral infection. Antibiotics should not be used unless bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed because of the risk of antibiotic resistance and MRSA.

There are over the counter medications that may help eg decongestants and pain medication to help with the throat. Decongestants include Sudafed or can be found combined with antihistamines eg Benadryl d or Claritine D. Pain medication include Naproxen or ibuprofen. There are also topical medications such as Chloroseptic spray/gargle or Covonia throat spray.

I hope this helps
