What Causes Sore Throat And Cough After Removal Of Tonsils In A 4 Year Old?

Hi. 2 days ago our 4 year old was very tired and uncharacteristically ate little. Yesterday she woke with a very sore throat and coughing. Last night for the first time she complained about a headache and had a bit of diarrhoea. In the middle of the night she had a fever for about 6 hours. We are on vacation so I don t have a thermometer but I would guess the fever to have been about 39-40C. This was accompanied by very shallow and rapid breathing. I only gave her something to reduce the fever in the early morning because I know fevers are a natural defence and she for the first time, complained about her throat hurting. The fever broke a couple hours later and she finally slept. Our daughter is normally full of energy. I have let her run around with fever of 38 and she is quite happy. I am only concerned due to the very sore throat and cough. She had her tonsils out 3 months ago because she couldn t actually breath at night. She now sounds like she did right after the operation. I m not sure if I should take her in or not as we are on vacation. As per her usual self she is happy this morning and fever is gone. Any advise would be great! Thank you for reading all this!!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, i do care for your concern.
The history said by you suggest more of upper respiratory tract infection.
the inflammation produced may cause swelling of pharynx that may cause difficult in breathing.
I would advise
To start on macrolide antibiotics and continue the full course, and paracetamol for fever.
have warm water for drinking, everything will be fine, need not panic.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Thank you.
I find this answer helpful
