What Causes Smelly Semen?

Hi Im10 weeks pregnant, I've noticed that my partner has had really bad smelling semen, his diet hasn't changed and yes he drinks and smokes but I've been with him for 2 years and its never smelled like this before. Im curious as to if this could be an infection and if it could hurt my baby.

Hello

I have read your statement and i understand your concern

Bad semen odor can be caused by various factors. Here are the details

1. Eating less vegetables and more meat
2. Uncircumcised > Circumcised
3. Sexually transmitted infections
4. Lack of Hygiene

Kindly counsel your partner to address any of the above points. if He is uncircumcised, then certain bacteria can accumulate and cause sub-acute infection that smells bad, which is not actually the smell of the semen but it is acquired after ejaculation

If he is circumcised, encourage him to eat more fruits and vegetables than beef and mutton.

If none of the above points are relevant, check for sexually transmitted disease especially trachoma and HPV infection

Thanks
Dr Nasir Ali
