Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter is 19 years old and recently developed a sloshing sound in her abdomen which I can plainly hear when she flexes her lower abdomen with her hands. She also feels a slight pain with it but nothing else. Should I be concerned? She was diagnosed with anemia recently and is on iron supplements. The development of this sloshing sound coincided with the end of her latest menstrual cycle. Otherwise she is quite athletic and very healthy.
As per my clinical experience, the splashing sound in abdomen indicates possible issue with hyperperistaltic movements of the intestines through variety of causes. The common ones being alterations in intestine flora homeostasis, side effect of iron supplements or others.
My guidelines at present: - Allow her plenty of liquids - Check for the regular smooth bowel evacuations - If needed use bulk forming laxatives - Anti spasmodic medicine as dicyclomine or drotaverine after meals
Discuss need of an ultrasound of the abdomen & pelvis with your primary care provider if the pain persist over a period of 2-3 days.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
