What Causes Slightly High ALT Levels On Blood Test?

My 63 year old husband has just had a blood test result showing ALT level of 47. His GP says this is 'slightly raised' and husband is now concerned. He drinks 1 or 2 glasses of white wine per week, he is a Dartmoor guide so walks 6 - 8k 3 or 4 times each week. He is fit and healthy otherwise with a good diet although eats a lot of red meat. Should we be concerned?

Hello and thank you for asking HCM.

I have read the report of your husband, and I understand your concerns.

First i want to say to not worry about the ALT level of 47.
There are a lot of reasons why a healthy patient, has elevated ALT.
-very strenuous exercise or severe injury to a muscle (your husband walks a lot, exercise)
-medicines, such as statins, antibiotics, aspirin, acetaminophen (paracetamol)
-alcohol (your husband has 1 or 2 glasses of wine per week)
-fatty liver ect

If i was your doctor,i would recommend to have a low fat diet, fresh fruit and vegetables, plenty of water and change the white wine with the red one, because of its ability to protect the heart. He is doing a healthy life with the walks.

He needs to do another blood test after 1 month or more to check the ALT/AST levels. But as i said ,a level of 47 is normal,so don't worry at all.

If you have any other question, feel free to ask me.
