Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my child' skull seems to have changed shape.. he's developed quite a pronounced bump on back of his head below the crown... he didn't have this at birth or infancy... his father had one so pronounced it was like a step at the back and he suffers from mood swings and was quite violent, my son seems to have mood swings, his father does not live with us but could this be in any way linked... should a skull of a 4year old be changing this much or should i get it checked?
Usually, an infant's skull shape changes easily due to pressure on it from the position of the head when he lies on the floor in his mattress or blanket. The changes are mostly seen when the child is less than 6-7 months old. The shape can really become odd - usually, there is flattening at the back, or on one side due to the way the child is kept on his mattress/blanket.
Once the child begins to sit independently, i.e. around 6-8 months of age, the pressure-related changes stop taking place, and the previously misshapen skull begins to return to NORMAL.
I really need to know what shape of skull his father had; I would be happier if you shared a picture both, of the child, and of the father, so that we can compare both with each other and reach a diagnosis. As far as the question on their behaviour goes, it will be premature to comment on it without seeing the skull Xrays of the child and the father. Once we have a diagnosis, we can predict what possible psychological changes can be present.
