What Causes Skipped Heart Beats?

Question on my dads skip heart beat. He was recently in the hospital due to feeling like fainting symptoms. He get these feelings quite a bit and the Dr he seen last week does not seem too concerned. He is 89 yrs old and had a quad bypass about 25-30 yrs ago. I had the heart Dr check the bypass and he said they all were good and in tack (about 2-3 yrs ago). Today he layed down to rest and he had the feeling again and passed out. He woke up and seen he had wet the bed. This happened last week during the early morning and the health care person help him clean his bed sheets when she arrived. He has 30 % usage of his heart but does fairly well until these symptoms of fainting came on. He is on a lot of medication, high blood pressure, heart medicine, etc. they have him taking water pills to reduce the flood so more blood flows to the brain. They are not really helping with the spells he has had over the last couple weeks. I am not sure what to do at this point. He has seen several heart specialist and his regular doctor. They cannot really diagnose the fainting or the feeling of faint with him except they said he has a skip beat and this is causing these spells. None of the medications are working. He told his Dr this past week at his appt, about him still having these spells. The Dr did not say anything except he seems to be doing good and he did not hear the skip beat in his heart. He still lives in his house (out of state) and is not ready to leave there on a permanent bases. Home health care does come out to see him since he has been home from the hospital the last couple of weeks. I need some answers on what could be causing this issue. I know he is not getting enough blood flow to the brain which is causing the feeling of faint or he actually faints. Any suggestions on what to do now since the specialist seem to think he is doing fine? I would really appreciate any suggestions on what to do. Thank you for your time as I am really concerned and want to help him get better. He is very good shape to be 90 yrs old and is not ready to give life up yet. Again Thank you! Pam

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As far as skipping heartbeat is concerned, very often they do not indicate a serious problem. However, it definitely needs to be evaluated by a competent cardiologist with EKG, Holter studies and other blood tests. Do consider visiting a cardiologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
