What Causes Skin Discoloration And Itching At The Site Of Wasp Sting?

My daughter got stung by a wasp 3 days ago on the bottom of her toe. The next day the foot got really swollen. She started taking Benadryl 3 times a day, now swelling is down but foot is turning purple and itches. Should I be concerned or is this normal?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
It is unfortunate that your daughter was stung by wasp.
Due to the local inflammatory reaction, the wound over the foot has turned purple and is itching.

What you have given syrup is fine and can continue with it.

In addition:
1. You can clean everyday the bite site with mild antiseptic like Savlon twice. This would prevent infection.
2. Give anti-inflammatory analgesic tablet like Ibuprofen twice a day.
3. You can apply Calamine lotion over the site twice daily, which would give soothening effect for the skin.

In case the would is not healing, it indicates infection for which antibiotic administration is necessary.

Hope she gets better early. All the best.
