What Causes Sinusitis With Foul Smelling Mucus?

Hi I had my upper wisdom tooth extracted on Jan 16th, and since Feb 4th, I came down with sinusitis, with foul smelling mucus. It coincided with the time when my stitches were dissolving. Is this normal? How long would it take for the oro-antral communication to heal? I was symptom free from January 22 - February 3. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,
Welcome to the HCM.
As tooth extraction can cause maxillary sinus infection (sinusitis) and if associated with foul smelling mucus , it may need antibiotics course for 1 to 2 weeks to eradicate the infection.Otherwise it may cause further complication like eye infection , headache etc.
I would suggest that get swab test done first and discuss with your treating doctor if you may need antibiotics course and follow accordingly.
Regards,
Dr.Maheshwari
