What Causes Shortness Of Breath While On Nitrofurantoin?

Hi there I have been taking Nitrofurantoin 50 mg daily for a month now but a couple of days ago I woke up during the night feeling out of breath. Since then I can’t breath as normal and I have a dry cough. Do I stop the medication? Thank you for your advice Kat

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Suspected drug allergy, however, other conditions need to be ruled out.

Based on the history given, you seem to have developed severe allergic reaction to Nitrofurantoin, however the possibility of other conditions such as nocturnal asthma or heart failure also should be considered.

So, stop taking the medication and consult your doctor for further evaluation and treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
