Hello,
Shortness of breath appears to be caused by Metoprolol. Metoprolol is a beta blocker which is commonly prescribed to treat
high blood pressure, angina (chest pain), arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm) and other conditions. Its most common side effects include decreased heartbeats, hypotension, cold or clammy skin, fatigue,
erectile dysfunction, weakness, nightmares, etcetera.
In patients suffering from
bronchial asthma or COPD, it may cause shortness of breath (even with mild exertion) and wheeze. So, it contraindicated in patients with bronchial asthma, or with a history of bronchial asthma, or severe chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease.
Beta blockers may adversely affect pulmonary function by counteracting the bronchodilation produced by beta-2 receptor agonists like Albuterol sulfate and thus trigger asthma symptoms.
So, in view of the above, I advise you to consult your doctor to prescribe an alternate effective, but a safer medication to control your abnormal heart rhythm instead of Metoprolol.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
