General & Family Physician 's  Response
Based on you introduction, your husband has stage 4 lung cancer, so that shallow breathing is shortness of breath (dyspnea) which is common during terminal cancer. Hence, overbreathing reduces CO2 levels in the arterial blood.

Hope this helps!

Take care & good luck to your husband.
