What Causes Severely Painful Ear Discharge?

I was woken in the night by sudden, quite severe earache. I don t have a cold, as such, but have had a cough (occasionally productive) for 2 days, and a very small amount of nasal congestion. I took co-codamol which relieved the pain for a few hours. There is no apparent discharge from the ear. Is it OK to wait and see what happens or should I see a doctor?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain ear ache can occur due to causes like ear infection, excess wax accumulation, foreign body impaction in the ear, traumatic injury to the ear, sinus infection, dental infections and TMJ problems..

As the pain was relieved with medication but recurred seems to be due to some pathology related to er or the other surrounding structures as I explained above you need to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical examination and investigations like Otoscopic examination, x ray or MRI scan can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

You can be advised to take a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkillers, analgesic and antibiotic ear drops..
Excess wax needs to be removed..
In case if it is due to some other cause treatment will be decided as per the diagnosis..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
