What Causes Severe Sunburn And Scabbing Scalp Despite Using Strong Sunscreen?

I was outside for most of the day on Saturday - from noon until dark. It was a very hot day out, and I used SPF 60 sunscreen. I reapplied at least 6 times throughout the day, and I still got a really bad sunburn. My scalp is scabbing. Should I be worried that sunscreen doesn t seem to work for me?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Sunscreen protects against UV rays and cancers caused by the harmful rays. Direct effect of physical heat may not be reduced by sunscreen which is the reason for scabbing or burning sensation of scalp. You may need to apply mild cortico-steroid cream like hydrocortisone to reduce the sunburn. Soothing agents like aloe vera gel can also be applied.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
