What Causes Severe Pain Under The Ribs On The Left Side?

A week ago I woke up with a burning pain under my ribs on the left side. Three days later a rash appeared on my back, left side. I went to urgent care on Tuesday, thinking I was bitten by a bug. I was diagnosed with Shingles. The pain remains under my ribs on the left side. I assume it s part of the Shingles diagnosis, since I m able to eat and all bodily functions seem good. I also assume I will have tenderness and pain for at least a month. I am on an antiviral medication. Maybe it s the medication causing the what feels like stomach discomfort? I am 63 and in good health, except for fibromyalgia for which no medication is taken.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Treatment of shingles with an antiviral drug can cause abdominal discomfort like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness, etc. Hence the symptoms being experienced by you are due to the antiviral drug being taken. Those will reduce in intensity after a few doses.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prabhakar Laxman Jathar
