What Causes Severe Pain In The Thighs While Suffering From Alzheimer's Disease?

Thank you. My mother is 90 and has the beginning stages of Alzheimer's. She has a pain in her thigh, X-ray and MRI showed nothing. Drs say it is a muscle knot and ordered physical therapy and 5 mg Oxycodone. It wasn't helping, so they increased the dose to 10mg, 3-4 times a day. She insists that nothing is helping. She says she is in pain even with the medication, which is very strong! She sounds more confused and forgetful than usual, we think due to the medication, but I am concerned about 2 things: Can the oxycodone make her Alzheimer's symptoms worse, even after she stops taking them? And Could it be her Alzheimer's that makes her feel like she is pain even with the strong medication? Thank you for your help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi. Pain tablets can def have side effects in the form of confusion especially in older people who can not tolerate these strong drugs anymore. They can sometimes even hallucinate due to them. Uf she is more confused on the higher dose I suggest lowering the dose. Regarding the pain, it is difficult to say whether its due to Alzheimers or she is really experiencing pain. I think it might depend on the extent of the cognitive decline.
