What Causes Severe Pain In The Right Knee?

I woke up yesterday with my right knee really hurting. I ve had no symptoms previously except that my knee has always been a little unstable. every step hurts to put weight on it. I don t know if it s a muscle thing but it hurts on the right side of the knee and then inside the knee when I walk. If I m not careful, it s giving out.
