What Causes Severe Pain In The Neck After Cervical Fusion?

I have plates in my neck c5c6 fusion done in 2006. I have had no problem with my neck since about a month ago. I have been in severe pain. The doctor says MRI shows nothing outstanding. Although there is plenty of cervical disk disease Apparently, it does not warrant surgery. I have been icing and using heat. I am considering taking Aleve. I do not like the idea of medication. Are there any more natural things I can do for the pain. I have been drinking a lot of water to cushion disks?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
there is widespread degenerative disease of the cervical spine resulting in nerve compression and pain.
the spinal fusion has definitely helped decompress the nerve but not in the entire spine.
try regular physiotherapy to strengthen the neck muscles
add natural calcium in the diet and take vitamin D supplements to strengthen the bones.
tab. Aleve would only give temporary relief so use it sparingly.
work on strengthening the bones and muscles by exercise and diet for long term results
