What Causes Severe Pain In The Lower Abdomen Before Periods?

Over the last couple of months I have been experiencing a horrible pain that happens either before my menstruation or after. The pain starts off as feeling lkke period pain as its in my lower abdomen under my belly button but then spreads to my lower back. It s a very sharp gripping pain that stay for about 5 minutes and makes my face go cold and makes my legs go numb and I begin to feel quite nauseous and light headed. It s such a horrible pain it almost feels like someone is pushing my lower back and pelvis into each other. What could this be? And how can i prevent it from happening? I have also struggled with very bad period pain that brings me to faint. Please help.
