What Causes Severe Pain In The Left Side Of Groin Area?

I am having severe pain left. side of groin area. Went to orthopedic Dr. This am 6.3.15 had a total knee replacement left knee 7. 2012 he did xray on my hip showed nothing he thinks it s a hernia made a Dr appointment his recommendation with a specialist for Monday the 8th of June. My questions are can I work without doing more damage? I work with small students with special needs,when do I go to the hospital? What heat or cold do I apply? Elevate legs or not? Stretch my leg groin area?other symptoms? Thank you Danene

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The commonest causes of groin pain are:
* Hernial sac dissecting through the tissues
* Nerve stretching
* Muscular causes
* Referred pain from ureter or so
* Pubic bone problems

This can be diagnosed by an actual examination of the area, cough reflex to see for hernia, local palpation to see for other causes. Do an ultrasound if required. Once the cause is found then one can get a specific treatment and the things you asked for about whether you will be able to work and stretch can be answered only after a proper diagnosis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
