What Causes Severe Pain In The Buttocks?

Hello, I was helping some family move from one home to another about 10 days ago. A couple days after the move I started having severe pain in my lower right buttocks that goes into the upper hamstring area. I originally thought I just pulled my glut muscles but is it normal to still be in so much pain 10 days later?

Hi there,

Yes it is possible that it is simply a pulled muscle, but it is also possible that you may have a slipped disc. The problem of a slipped disc originates from the spine, but since it pinches on a nerve, the pain can radiate through the buttocks and the back of the leg all the way to the outside of your foot and toes.

It is more likely to be a slipped disc if the pain improves when you lie down and is aggravated when you lean down while standing. A muscle strain may feel better with a stretch, and yes, as you have noted, should have improved at least a little after 10 days.

Try some anti-inflammatories like diclofenac if you have no allergies, it helps even with a slipped disc because it will bring down inflammation in the irritated nerve. If the pain is still sharp or you get any numbness, you may need to get yourself to an orthopaedic doctor to consider if it is worth performing an MRI of your back to look at the discs.

Hope this helps.

Dr. Teh
