What Causes Severe Pain In Legs Despite Taking Tramadol?

I am a 78 year old male who had polio in 1942..I have an extremely cued spine. I walk with 2 full leg braces and crutches. However, can only walk very short distance, i.e. 50ft. and use electric chair. have severe pain in my right leg in shin area. If I stay in bed there is little or no pain. I have had 3 MRI s of total spine. One Doctor said I had a pinched nerve the other said he seen only a thinning of the spine. I do NOT want to become addictive to ANY drug if possible, but the pain is more than I can bear. I take 4 - 7 TRAMADOL HCL 50 mg daily and still need more. I am considering getting a diabetic medicine strickly for the pain. What do you think???

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist 's  Response
hi,

thank you for providing the brief history of you.

A thorough neuromuscular assessment is advised.

As mentioned by you that you have had a MRI of lumbar spine and it reveals you have a pinched nerve which is a degenerative change of the spine. Also, as for pinched nerve you can undergo physical therapy who will use - therapeutic ultrasound therapy, for reducing the inflammation ; TENS therapy, for pain relief & Physical exercises for strenthing the core, pelvic floor and spinal muscles. Also the focus on hip muscles is important.

In my practical experience I am currently seeing a case of post polio syndrome who had poliomyelitis when he was 10 years old. Now his age is 70, he also has same symptoms of pinched nerve and an addition of shoulder pain. Since understanding the cause of the pain and how to get rid of that is of due importance. Taking a lot of medicine may lead to rise of creatinine levels and damage the kidneys. Well, this guy had same issues of avoiding drug therapy. He also had issue for walking where he couldn't walk more than 20 feet at a stretch. We have started physical therapy, and by the proper muscular assessment and MRI scan understanding we have planned a program which has helped him. Now he is able to walk a stretch of 200ft at one go without any aches and pains. also now he has stopped the medicine completely and his blood pressure is also under the normal levels where a cardiologist had to modify the dosage and reduce it.

I will recommend you to find a good physical therapist who has a sound knowledge about post polio syndrome, as you need an accuracy of rehabilitation for your mobility and pain as well.

For any detailed queries you are always welcome.
