Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I went to a new dentist, and he asked me to open my mouth as far as I could and when I did I felt my jaw crack. I didn t think anything of it because my jaw cracks and pops all the time. Since then, I have pain in my right jaw bone all the time and it hurts when I chew. The pain is especially bad in the morning. Did I possibly damage my jaw?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.
As per your complain it seems that you already had some disorder related to the jaw joint known as Temporomandibular joint as clicking and popping of the jaw is not a normal finding. Cracking of the jaw on excessive mouth opening can be due to dislocation of the articular disc which is a soft cushion present between the bony edges of the jaw joint but it can be confirmed only after thorough evaluation and a full mouth x-ray known as Orthopantomogram..
There can also be inflammation of muscles due to overstretching..
Nothing to worry, consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and after a confirmatory diagnosis proper treatment can be planned..
As of now you can take anti-inflammatory painkiller Ibuprofen, muscle relaxant like Chlorzoxasone and do warm compresses over the jaw. Take a soft diet and avoid excessive mouth opening..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
