What Causes Severe Pain In Hips And Knees?

I have terrible pain in my back. I have been told that I have 1 blown disc and 4 bulging as well. It is my lower back L1-S1. Pain and numbness on the left side all the way down to my toes. They tell me that I have degenerative bone disease as well as arthritis. My problem now is that both of my hips are beginning to ache and both knees as well. Quite possibly might I be looking at something a little more than lower lumbar pain and issues since it is now feeling like to me that it is beginning to spread. I will give you a list of the medications I am on as well terbinafine, fish oil, crestor, womens mega vitamin, calcimate complete, etodolac, duloxetine, and Coq10. Also I live on over the counter pain meds to make it through each day. Some days are worse than others. Aleve, naproxen, tylenol, advil you name it I use it. Also I have tried topicals like stop pain and those things too. Thanks Kenda

Hello,

Severe pain in the hips radiating to the knees is a sign of overuse, wear or tear, injury. Problem in the hip joint may cause pain down the front of the leg and in the knee. Get your hip re-examined and treated. Pressure on the sciatic nerve can cause pain in the lower back that spreads to the hip, buttocks, leg even to the groin. Get your slip discs treated, slip disks cause pressure on the nerve aggravating pain.

Sitting causes increased pressure on the sciatica nerve as it travels below the gluteus muscles down to the leg. Avoid sitting on a soft couch for a long time or hard chairs. Walking is good to relieve pain. Massage therapy, physical and heat therapy is effective, get connected to a physical therapist. To improve the nerve health take vitamin E, zinc and selenium to improve nerve health.

You can also take curcumin (turmeric) supplements if you don't consume turmeric as a part of your daily diet. Eating foods rich in Vitamin B12, Vitamin B12 oral supplementation, and Vitamin B12 injections could help nerve healing. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
