What Causes Severe Pain In Hip Radiating To Buttocks And Legs?

A few days ago I started to feel pain in my upper left leg/hip/buttocks area and started a mild limp. The pain has increased and it is very painful to set down and get up. I also have pain just moving. I am walking by dragging my left leg. Aleve is not helping with pain. I participated in a 2 mile walk about 1.5 weeks ago, my first serious walk in quite some time.

General & Family Physician 's  Response

Hi
Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for the severe radiating pain from hips to buttocks and the legs.

Features described in your query are suggestive of Sciatica.
The most common cause being a lumbar disc herniation directly pressing on the nerve, any cause of irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve can produce the symptoms of sciatica.

I advice you to consult an orthopedic surgeon for further management which may include the following tests:
X-rays spine, CT scan, MRI scan, and Electromyogram used to further find out the exact cause of sciatica.

Since you are not getting improvement with Aleve, your doctor might prescribe drugs like Amitryptiline, Gabapentine, Venlafaxine which are more effective in reducing the painful nerves.

Bed rest is recommended during acute sciatica.
Take care.
A feed back is appreciated.
I find this answer helpful
