What Causes Severe Pain In Ear While Coughing?

I just got over the flu, and of course, my son gave me a cold. I was coughing hard with the flu, but this now with the cold is just unbearable. Every once in a while, I go into extreme coughing fits despite medication, and now a new symptom has formed. I'll cough, super hard, and my right jaw pops and there's some pretty heavy pain in my right ear for about a minute and then it dissipates. I'm just curious if the coughing is causing my jaw to temporarily dislocate. Background, I do have TMJ.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain of having cough and cold along with a history of TMJ..
Well, severe pain in ear while vigorous coughing that lasts for a minute can be due to TMJ itself as the jaw joint is located near the ear and pain from it can be felt in ear..
Due to coughing hard there seems to be sudden jerky movement of the jaw joint and it is leading to pain but does not exactly looks like dislocation..
I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician and get the jaw joint examined as well as a full mouth x ray can help in diagnosis..
You should also get your ear checked by an ENT to look for infection in ear which is many a times seen secondary to cold and flu..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards,
Honey Nandwani Arora.
