What Causes Severe Pain Below The Rib Cage?

I m having a really uncomfortable pain between the bottom of my rib cage and hip bone on the left side. It comes in pulses. On a pain scale of 1-10, I d say it s about a 6 when it happens. It s making me nervous because I m thinking it s my kidneys. I m just wanting some insight or opinions before I go to the E.R. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & |Welcome.
I can understand your concern.
The symptoms described are suggestive of renal colic (pain due to kidney problem). I therefore advise you to go the ER immediately for proper evaluation. You would probably be given injectable antispasmodic drugs for immediate relief of colicky pain. A urine examination and an abdominal ultrasound scan would help in the diagnosis of kidney problems such as infection or stones. Hope the information will enable you to seek urgent medical care.
Best wishes, a feed back is appreciated.
