Hi, thanks for using healthcaremagic.
Your son is likely having peroneal
tendonitis, an inflammation of a tendon which runs along the ankle caused by overuse.
He has been employing good strategies to reduce the inflammation around the ankle, except the most important of them, which is resting the foot.
If your son continues with the activities which triggered the overuse inflammation in the first place, the inflammation would not subside. I would counsel that he stops or reduce the activities at the training, so the other strategies he has been employing would be fully effective.
Additionally, he would benefit from over-the-counter pain relief drugs and
physical therapy such as massage and stretch exercise of the foot. This is schedules and done by a physiotherapist which you should schedule an appointment with.
If rest, ice, pain medications,
bracing does not make the pain and swelling resolve within a few weeks, an
orthopaedic surgeon should be consulted. The surgeon would institute other treatment options including
steroid injections.
I hope i have answered your question.
Please call back if you have got more questions.
Best wishes.
