What Causes Severe Mood Swings And Depression?

Matt s parents are extremely worried for him and Matt is becoming more and more frustrated. He experiences extreme highs and lows Sometimes he feels on top of the world ...exited and like he can do anything. And then, sometimes he feels hopeless and like theirs no point in living. It is as if he cannot control these crazy mood sings. What is wrong with Matt and how can this stop?

Hello,

I wish I could ask how old is Matt? How long has he been acting this way? What is your relationship to him and how do you know so much about him?

Where are his parents? What grade is he in? How is he doing in school? How well does he interact with others? Peers? Adults? Parents? Siblings? Does he have any medical conditions?

Is he taking medications? Is there any family history of mental illness? You did a good job in the brief description you gave of telling about his behavior.

From your information Matt might have bipolar disorder. Of course more must be learned. This is quite serious and he must be evaluated by a child/adolescent psychiatrist in order to be diagnosed and treated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr Arnold Zedd, Pediatrician
