What Causes Severe Leg Pain Along With Prominent Veins In An Adolescent?

I think that my 17 year old daughter has varicose veins in her leg. She is having a lot of pain in her leg and the vein is bulging out from her groin to her knee. Can the veins bulge out overnight? I also have varicose veins but I do not remember them bulging out overnight. Any advice for the pain until we can see her doctor? She is an athlete and is not overweight, and drinks a lot of water. Thank you Amy

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello.
This sounds more serious than just a varicose vein problem

She may have a deep venous thrombosis--a clot in a deep leg vein and that can be dangerous since it can lead to a pulmonary embolus

She can try ibuprofen for the pain but she needs to see a doctor right away for Dopper venous flow studies of the leg
