What Causes Severe Headaches In The Morning?

Hi there, Looking for some professional insight. I have been suffering headaches for most of my life, in recent years they have been much worse. I, on average, have headaches 5 out of 7 days a week. On average i take panadol and ibruphen twice a day and on really bad days I take nurophen plus. My headaches are always worse in the morning, usually wake up with a pounding in my right temple. I do suffer migraines about once every 2 months and i do become light sensitive and nauseous. I drink lots of water and have tried cutting out caffeine and it makes no difference. Have had my eyes tested and wear low prescription glasses for reading only. The headaches affect my day to day function and work life. Past medical history: PTSD and depression/anxiety.....I take 75mg effexor daily.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This could be attributed to tension headaches. It is a common symptom in individuals who complain of headached 5/7 days in a week.

You should try not using paracetamol so many times a week. As analgesic headaches are a thing. In the mean time, try learning some breathing and meditation exercises temporarily every morning to decrease the frequency of the same.

You could use phone apps like Calm to learn these techniques.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
