What Causes Severe Hair Loss While Having Hypothyroidism?

Hello, I am 30 Male and originally from (South) India.. Moved to Raleigh,North carolina in July 2015 and been living here since then. I am having severe hair fall ever since I have moved here.. I have lost at least 75% of my hair in about 14 months. I got a full body checkup done in Oct 2015 and found that I had sub clinical hypothyroidism. (TSH Count was 7) - Doctor put me on levothyroxine and have been taking it without a miss. Checked my TSH levels after 2 months and it was under control.. Firstly, not sure why I got thyroid issue.. I never had it in the past and I don t know what triggered this after my move.. Secondly, Hair fall issue does not seem to stop/reduce at all.. The things I have tried till now? -- Take hair, skin and nails supplements (suggested by a doctor) -- got a new shower filter (assuming that water can be an issue) -- Started taking bath in drinking water (that I buy from grocery stores) -- Trued different clarifying shampoos PS: I am sure this is not due to stress or lack of exercise.. My lifestyle has been pretty much the same for last 10- 15 years.. My wife is facing the exact same problem except the thyroid issue (Thankfully!). Please suggest how can we save whatever little hair is left as of now?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Hair fall has different reasons. Either it may be due to low haemoglobin or biotin.

Some genetic heritance from your family may be there also. Environmental and food also play important roles.

As per my opinion, you both should visit skin specialist and have a look. Also, apply regular hair oil twice a week.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nirav Nimavat, General & Family Physician
