What Causes Severe Dry Cough, Wheezing And Cold In A Child?

Hi good day,my 1 year 1 month old daughter, suffers alot of wheezing, high fevers, followed buy a dry cough that turns in to a mucus cough, when she has a cold, she was treated for bronchitis at 2 months of age, since then treated 3-4 times for the same thing in south africa, she has a twin brother, who doesn't suffer nearly as much as she does. They were both born between 35-36 gestation in south Africa, she was 2.24 kgs at birth via caesarean,we are currently living in Thailand the past 3 months. My family has a history of asthma,my 2nd eldest son has it & my self. When we visit the clinic,3-4 times already, the doctor provides the exact same medication, for sinus, cough, fever. Please can you help me with a suggestion what to do,from experience with my eldest son (7) I'm worried its also asthma.

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your child have symptoms of severe dry cough, wheezing and cold which seems to be due to severe upper respiratory tract infection. Child may have lung infection or bronchitis. Need not to worry. Avoid cold carbonated beverages. I would suggest you to do warm saline gargles with pinch of salt water. Take expectorants. Steam inhalation is very effective for you. Consult pediatrician without any delay. Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test or may take history. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin or penicillin at least for 10 days along with decongestants and mucolytic agents. Mast cell stabilizers such as sodium cromoglycate is effective to prevent infection.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
