What Causes Severe Cough While Suffering From Fluid In The Lungs?

Hi, My husband was reccently hospitilized with pulminary embolism, possible pleurisy, fluid on the lungs, irritating cough. They drained 1 litre of fluid from the right lung. He was having trouble breathing. He now still has a bad cough but no trouble breathing and takes Xarelto for the blood clots. He does have a mild cold but the cough is very troublesome. Do you know if the cough is related to anything and what a to do about it?
