Dear Dr. My Mom who is 66 years in Columbus Ohio has a 24 hour contouis cough that makes her feel exahusted all the time. Every like 10 or 15 minutes she coughs for at least 5 minutes and she will not be able to talk or stop it. It is tough. it has been like this for few years now. She went to Docotrs and they tell her it is Allergy and many gave her phlem cough suppressant and it made it worse and no solution. What do need to do and hellp heal and get her life back on track. she cannot sleep at night since she will wake up to cough.
The commonest causes of recurrent and persistent cough not amenable to usual treatment are one of the following: - Bronchial asthma. - Cardiac causes. - Allergic bronchitis. - Postnasal drip causing granular pharyngitis and irritational cough.
Consult a Pulmonologist for clinical examination, PFT meaning pulmonary function tests, CT scan of chest and relevant tests of phlegm, blood and so on. If required a second opinion of an ENT Surgeon and Cardiologist evaluation will help to confirm or rule out the causes. All these efforts will play an important role in getting the exact cause and thus help have a specific treatment and relief.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
