Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my husband has had a consistent cough for over a month. His cough seems to have worsened over the last 4-5 days. Everyone has been feeling some sort of allergie symtoms so I think his might be sinus drainage . tonight he was coughing hard and felt a pop in his head and has an excruciating headache. He says it one of the worst he s ever had. Should we go to the ER?
His symptoms are indicative of underlying respiratory conditions like asthma, bronchitis, bronchiectasis, sinus conditions or allergy. He is advised to get sputum and swab tests done. Sometime, cough headache can also be due to primary conditions, when the cough raises the pressure of the chest & abdomen. Hence pressure of the brain and spinal cord is increased causing headache.
It is commonly treated with Acetazolamide, to reduce the amount of spinal fluid and hence headache. CT / MRI is done tor rule out tumors, defects in the brain, weakened brain blood vessels. He should get himself adequately hydrated with water and fluids. Get him treated at the earliest.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
