What Causes Severe Constipation After Taking Valsartan?

My husband recently started taking Valsartin and believes it is causing him to be constipated. He had colo-rectal cancer 9 years ago leaving him with a j-pouch. It is not good for him to be constipated. Could this be the cause. He recently was treated for high blood pressure. I m thinking this could also be the cause. Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It is not related to Valsartan.

As the first line of management, he can try laxatives like Lactulose. Include more fiber-rich foods in the diet.

If the symptoms persist better to consult a gastroenterologist and get evaluated.

A colonoscopy is required to rule out possibilities like a recurrence of the tumor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
