What Causes Severe Chills?

Hello my mom is 92 and in good health. Lately when she is sleeping she wakes up with very cold spells. She says it is not like cold chills but she is extremely cold like she is freezing to death. It is always very warm in the house and she covers up with blankets but has been having these spells lately and it seems to only be when sleeping. Could it be a lung or heart problem? Thank you so much for any suggestions you may have. Peggy

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The chills can be due to an infection, generally in the respiratory system.
I suggest you to give her anti inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day.
I also suggest you to do a complete blood count and a urine test to confirm the cause of the symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
