What Causes Severe Chest Pain While Coughing?

Hello. I had a terrible coughing cold and ended up with walking pneumonia about two months ago. I have been coughing hard on and off about five or ten times a day to bring up phlegm since then, but not sick. I d developed a dire area on my rib about four days ago, but it was mild. Yesterday, I coughed hard and heard/ felt a pop and snap in this exact spot. I felt instant terrible pain. And now if I cough, I about pass out with pain. If I sit still, there is just a mild ache. Certain movements and bearing down to go to the bathroom also make it hurt terribly. I m worried because now I m not able to bring up the phlegm. Should I go to the ER, or wait to see my Doc on Monday.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
From history it seems that due to spasmodic cough there is spasm of inter-costal muscles giving this severe pain on the part.
Due to pneumonitis this pain can be there as it takes some time to resolve pneumonia patch.
Go for x-ray chest to rule out pleural effusion.go for deep breathing exercises daily.
Take some cough suppressant syrup.
Ok and take care.
