What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain On The Left Side?

On the lower left side of abdomen I have severe cramping like my intenstines are twisting and bulging? The pain is so bad that at the time it happening I can not move or do anything except push down on my stomach until it stops. The pain will last up to 3 to 5 minute then wane and repeat again or sometimes stop. Is this normal??
