What Causes Several Psychotic Episodes, Extreme Anemia And Crohn's Disease?

Hi My mother-n-law has had several psychotic episodes over a 55 yr span of her life. After child birth, thyroid storm, broken arm/ surgery and now extreme anemia which resulted in blood transfusion and several tests. Diagnosis of chrones disease. Sleep deprivation brings on these episodes. The last one was 18 years ago so the left over lithium is very old. At the present time , she is having symptoms again. I feel the lithium is too outdated. Help!!!!

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Lithium is a mood stabiliser drug and is commonly used in bipolar disorders and it is not a drug for psychosis. The drug helps to control the mood aggravations and result in improvement. You have mentioned that she has history of psychotic episodes since many years along with other medical complications. The onset was preceded by sleep deprivation, in my opinion she is probably suffering from Bipolar disorder though detailed history is needed to confirm diagnosis. Medicines like Sodium Valproate, Carbamazepine, Oxcarbazepine etc can be used for control of her mood symptoms. For psychotic symptoms Olanzapine, Quetiapine etc can help. These medicines also help in controlling mood. Please visit her psychiatrist and take proper opinion for her symptoms.

Thanks, I hope this helps you. Take care
