What Causes Secondary Progressive MS?

I was diagnosed with MS in 1996, STARTED TAKING Copaxone shots IN 2000. About 18 months ago I had an MRI that showed that I hadn t had any new activity in almost 10 yrs. Dr. took me off of Copaxone for 1 yr. Recently returned to have another MRI. This one showed several new spots but they weren t active. She called it Secondary Progressive MS Tell me about that.

It’s not clear why people progress from relapse-remitting to secondary progressive MS. Some scientists think it may be an aftereffect of nerve injury that happened early in the disease. But they need more research to understand what’s behind the shifts in the disease. The main type of drugs for MS, called disease-modifying drugs (DMDs), make relapses happen less often and symptoms less severe. For people with SPMS who still have relapses, DMDs can still help. But for those whose symptoms just get gradually worse, the drugs don’t really work. Please consult your neurophysician he will examine and treat you accordingly.
